Whilst it’s true that malware, hacking, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) and ransomware attacks are on the rise, the threat of employees inadvertently causing data breaches due to targeted phishing attacks occurs daily. This can be credentials being stolen from phishing attacks, malware infecting the network from spam email or even mistakes such as sending files to the wrong email address.
The Ponemon Institute recently reported that of the 874 incidents reported to them, 64% were caused by employee or contractor negligence. Additionally, a 2017 insider threat report stated that 53% of businesses estimate remediation costs of over $100,000 and 12% at over $1 million.
